About Clay & Kiln
An independent resource for pottery makers, ceramic enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the craft of working with clay.
What We Do
Clay & Kiln publishes in-depth guides on pottery and ceramics, with a particular focus on the Czech ceramic tradition. Our content covers the full range of the ceramic process: from preparing clay and throwing on the wheel, through glazing and surface decoration, to kiln firing and finishing.
Every article is written by people with hands-on studio experience. We throw, glaze, and fire regularly — and we test the techniques we write about. When we describe a glazing method or a firing schedule, it comes from actual practice, not from rewriting other sources.
Our Approach to Content
We believe in practical, specific information over vague generalities. When we write about centering clay, we describe the physical mechanics. When we discuss glaze defects, we explain the chemistry. This approach serves readers who want to actually improve their craft, not just read pleasant descriptions of it.
Our editorial standards:
- Accuracy — technical claims are verified against established references including Daniel Rhodes' Clay and Glazes for the Potter, Robin Hopper's Functional Pottery, and peer-reviewed ceramic material science publications.
- Practical focus — every guide includes actionable steps that readers can apply in their own studios.
- Regular updates — content is reviewed and updated quarterly to ensure accuracy and relevance.
- Transparent sourcing — we link to authoritative external resources including Wikipedia, Britannica, and professional ceramic organizations so readers can verify and explore further.
